Sustainability in Guitarmaking

The issue of sustainability is extremely complex. It’s difficult to find clear answers and solutions. Nevertheless, I think we all have a responsibility to look after our environment and to do our bit, no matter how small. Timber is one of the most sustainable materials available, but only if forests are managed sustainably. Even so, that shouldn’t give us an excuse to use the material carelessly.

I am always mindful to minimise waste and to make sure I maximise the potential of any piece of wood that comes through the workshop. I get excited when I can find and use good quality reclaimed timber, and whilst this second life has the least impact of all, it’s not always easy to find suitable timber for acoustic backs and sides.

One of the simplest things we can do is to plant trees. For each guitar I make I donate to One Tree Planted to more than offset the materials I’m using and to help contribute to a wide variety of reforestation schemes across the world. I also donate regularly to the Woodland Trust who are doing some great work here in the UK.
